Champions Are Made Out of Adversity

Brooklin MI (6-12-09) - The weather for the “Racing For Wild Life 200 “ at Michigan Int’l Speedway was not going to give Chase Miller and the Landmark Dodge/SpeedFactory No. 4 Dodge any breaks this past weekend. Because of the rain, Miller and the Cunningham Motorsports Dodge team would be denied the valuable Thursday test time and the opportunity to earn a good starting spot by qualifying. Instead the teams would only get 50 minutes of practice time on race day and they would be lined up for the start by owner’s points. Miller started the race in the 17th position.

“Paul Andrews (crew chief) and the whole Cunningham Motorsports team worked really hard to prepare this race car”, said Chase Miller, “We did not get yesterdays practice or the chance to test here on the open test day two weeks ago, but the car felt really good in today’s short practice session. I am confident that the Cunningham Motorsports - Landmark Dodge/SpeedFactory No. 4 Dodge will have something here for them when we get started.”

When the race started, Miller began his advance towards the front. Miller quickly made his advance to the sixth position when, on lap 18, the caution flag came out to clear debris after a car hit the wall on the back stretch.

When the race restarted on the lap 22, the leaders stacked up the field and Miller was accidentally hit from behind and spun across the track. Unable to stop, another car hit the No. 4 Dodge, tearing off the entire rear panel and bending the rear quarter panels. The damage would not discourage the Cunningham – Landmark/SpeedFactory Dodge team.

Miller pitted and at the direction of Paul Andrews, the Cunningham team went to work making repairs. They cut off the damaged panels and the rear bumper bars and sent Miller back out before going a lap down. Miller restarted at the back of the field in the 22nd position. The extensive damage on the No. 4 Dodge made the race car extremely loose and ill handling. Miller had to muscle the race car, racing hard to stay on the lead lap. It wasn’t until lap 59 that a series of cautions would give the team another opportunity to make further repairs.

The final pit stop and repairs were made and Miller’s Landmark/SpeedFactory Dodge restarted the race in the 19th position on lap 62 of 100. As the laps quickly ran down, Miller drove hard, advancing the No. 4 Dodge through the field. By lap 75 he was back into the sixth position. With just 14 laps to go he was in fifth. Again, with just 8 laps remaining, the caution waved. Miller had raced his way into the fourth position. After cleanup, the laps had run down forcing the race to be restarted for a one lap shootout to the checkered flag. Miller restarted in the fourth position and gained yet another spot, bringing the heavily damaged Cunningham Motorsports Landmark Dodge/SpeedFactory No. 4 Dodge home in the third position.

"It was not an easy day," said Miller. “Last week was the first time that we had all worked together. We all came here to win this race and had to settle for third, but it was a hard earned third place. Those restarts were one giant accordion and I got caught up in it and tore the whole rear end of my car off. For a while it just felt like we were wrecking every lap there. We went to work on the car, made some adjustments and it took off like a missile again. There were plenty of challenges, first the rain and then the damaged race car. Nobody on the team gave up; the challenges just made us come together and work harder. The way these guys rallied to overcome obstacles makes them a championship caliber team. This was a two race deal with Cunningham Motorsports. Just think what we could do if we worked together every week!”
